Comments I was looking at my da 20 form trying to figure out the aptitude test ,what the initials and scores were. recruiter told me about asa and that I qualified. I signed up for that, but later was told both parents needed to be American citizens. I always wondered about this. DA 20 shows I enlisted for acgf17(arg01-210) I enlisted 1965, was I lied to? Comments Great web site. I was in Sinop 1971-1972 . Worked out at Hippy when we lost all AC power and the old generator would not power the building correctly. Took the HP freq counter out and found out the generator was at 30 HZ. Cranked up the RPM and the building came to life. I was now the expert and had to babysit that generator non stop for two solid days. Remember the time when Ron Dieters and I were up working on replacing a unit on the back of a dish when we saw a MIG flying over, so we didn't miss this opportunity to moon them. Would love to talk with some of the best guys I ever knew.

Comments Morse code was pounded into our sculls full of mush. By the time I left the ASA, I was copying around 38 groups per minute. To this day I can still understand Morse Code when I hear it. I was traumatized for sure...well...along with the constant rocket and mortar attacks in Nam. It's a shame that we old "Spooks and Spies" are still hiding in the shadows. Not many have ever heard of the ASA and what we did.

Dropped in Nha Trang at the Grand Hotel where we found a tent we had to put up and told this is it. Enjoy. Comments I have been diagnosed with End Stage Emphysema, as of 2009. The VA Doctors in Nashville, TN have me on a good medicine/oxygen regimen now. I was denied Lung Transplant as I have improved a bit. In 2014 it was estimated I had about 5 years left. In 2018, that estimate is out the window, and with my new diet, and Doctor plan, I am just going to forge ahead. Life is to be lived without fears. My life in Thailand is my most fond memory of my service. The food, people, customs, and scenery were all amazing.

Comments Was in Kang-wha-do from 1957 til 1959, at the time if I remember correctly, the tour was for 15 mos, but a lot of us got extended for another 7 mos until our replacements could get out of school, due to this, we were let out of service 90 days early. I served 22 mos and 10 days at Kang-wha-do!! I remember John Skarda, from MInn/St Paul area. Gerald Kurkowski from Calif. I believe? We were one of the first units to track and record info from the Russian Sputnik in Oct. of 57!! I believe our Sgt's last name was Mitchell!

I was in Vietnam with the 3rd RRU from June 1961 until mid January 1962. I knew Tom Davis when he was part of our extensive unit. Would be interesting in hearing anyone who was in those early months in the Vietnam involvement. Bob, The e-mail today included some photos from 1961 from George Miller, with folks on the way to Can Tho in 1961. With the 3rd RRU, I was also in Can Tho, and on that ferry across the Mekong. These photos are likely from a slightly later time in 1961. Our detachment went from Vung Tau to Can Tho in August. I was there for about six weeks and then went on to Saigon, to stay there until mid-January. FYI, none of us wore military uniforms because of the directions [likely from NSA and the State Department] to dress only in civilian clothes. Also for the six months I was in Viet Nam we were, more or less, on our own, supported with the per diem rate given to the State Department staff. My recollection is that per diem was over $50 for each day. We took the per diem to take care of board, food, and other daily needs. Folks following us were not as "royally" compensated. Do you have an e-mail links for George Miller or Sergeant Barber? I knew Barber from his being our trick leader when I was at the 14th ASA station in Japan before and after my sojourn to Viet Nam.
