Went to Vietnam with the Advance party from my company by Ship out of Oakland Army Terminal. Arrived in country in Derc 1966 and taken to BearCat, South Vietnam. Extended tour and when I came back from my 30 day leave was transfer to the 175th RRC at Bien Hoa Air Force Base. Was there from Dec. , 1967 until July 1968. I predicted TET of 1968 ten days before it happen. I asked the Warrant Officer in charge of Operation to send message to Gen. Westmoreland . He changed the addressee to NSA and removed my name from bottom of message and put his there and had it sent to NSA. During the ten day of TET the American Military lost approximately 3,500 military personal.

Comments The 409th was a short introduction to VN then back to 175th RRC for 3 months during which was the enlisted riot the night we built a bonfire in the middle of the company area and threw everything that would burn into it. Not a real good idea with one of the largest heliports in the country right next to us but made us feel better. Then flying RU-8Ds out of Nha Trang and An Khe for the last 6 months before going back to finish out my time at Vint Hill. Loved coping the Russian and Chinese ICBM tests in 70 and 71 and having to pull guard duty in DC during the peace riots. I made the mistake of getting out at the end of my 4 years. I was a really good Ditty Bopper and loved my job. Just found a working/flying RU-8D in the Combat Air Museum in Topeka Kansas that was a kick to see again and get to crawl inside of and sit for a few minutes. Oh to be young again.

John Percy - MOS = 1648
Duty stations = Camp Kilmer, Ft Dix, Ft Gordon, Ft Devens
Inducted in Camp Kilmer. Basic in Ft Dix, Aug & Sep 1953. Oct 1953 in Ft Devens.
Nov 1953 - Apr 1954 in Ft Gordon for radio repair (should have gone to Ft Monmouth). May 1953 to Jun 30, 1956 back to Ft Devens for permanent assignment. Very disappointed not having been deployed somewhere overseas. Did not enlist to spend time in the states. Did meet my future wife from the Worcester area. Still married after 59 years. That has been quite an assignment tho. Left military primarily because of being caught in two major rank freezes stateside. All the other guys ho went to basic and schools at the same time, and assigned to overseas duties made E-5;  we statesiders only made it to E-4. Left, made it thru college, career, retired, and am still working just to stay active and one step ahead of the grim reaper. Have not been able to connect with any of the former basic and Devens buddies to this date.

Comments/Questions: After getting out of Army '76 I went back home to the Boston area and to college. After graduating college went to work in the financial field which I hated and it hated me. Then was lucky and obtained a job working for the Federal government as a Special Agent for one of the larger Federal agencies and now I am retired living life large. Overall with my military time, I retired with just over 30 of Federal Service.  Life is good in retirement.

Comments At 856th RRD: I remember the red dog we called "Dog" who could run full speed through our concertina wire security fence. I ran a little concession out of a little building we used as a club house. I got the supplies from the PX in Saigon by faking an officers signature. At 409th RRD: I remember a few of us taking an APC to a quarry where we would fill (very few) sandbags and back the APC up to the pit and open a door on the top to use as a high dive. On another outing we crossed the edge of a rice paddy and got the APC stuck. Since it was getting late and we weren't well armed we sent someone back to get another APC to pull us out. A little later our (very scary looking short giant Hawaiian) motor pool Sargent (with knots all over his huge arms) appeared running full gas in another APC to kill all of us after he pulled out the first APC. Fortunately for us he didn't even get close before he got stuck. Someone else ran back for help from the 11th Cavalry motor pool. They came back with a giant tank retriever just before dark. The motor pool Sargent forgot to kill us.

Comments Thought of re-enlisting but the Pentagon Doctors found a heart murmur. NOT ELIGIBLE. Of course they couldn't find it when I was being processed for enlistment in 1963. Nice job. I joined up to be part of President John F. Kennedy's army. Then they killed him. I stopped trusting anyone with power.

Comments Loved the job as long as the military BS left us alone to do it. Day 2 in Saigon at the replacement center we were transferred out to the 3rd RRU where on day 3 in Vietnam the Viet cong hit the airport and the 3rd compound killing a sergeant whose name I never new. He had no more than 2-3 days left in country. It was at that point I wrote my ass off as ever going home. I watched jets coming out of Danang to hit a position on the opposite side of the Phu Bai airport sending stumps and dirt flying well into the air. We were rocketed at Danang on the way to R/R. I was at Phu Bai when it was hit for the first time ever (Jan or Feb. 1967) with over 25 plus rounds hitting just outside the ops. building sending shrapnel through the bathroom wall and hitting one of our own as everyone was dashing up the street to hit the trenchline. (I spent the last 30 days sleeping with my gear on and weapon in my bunk when sleeping.) My last station was Bad Aibling as a newly married guy living off post on a German farm---didn't get much better. To all those we lost, I still question what it was all about and why. We all were raised on John Wayne, and I was a Boy Scout out to serve my country. That is all I know. I still believe I did what was right, but I am conflicted on it. Hang in there.

Comments A wonderful 3 years 9 months of service. It gave me the time I needed to refocus and return to college where I completed my B.S. degree in business administration. I considered making the Army a career. I tried to apply for OCS when I completed basic training, signal school and my arrival in the Philippines. Each time I was put off, namely by a well meaning 1st sergeant. I finally got my application processed and C.O.’s endorsement just before completing 2 years of service. My “package” was sent to Okinawa and I was told to wait for orders. To my chagrin, I was in the com center monitoring inbound traffic, when my fate was sealed. I got to read the message as it came in........”reapply application.........application misplaced! I promptly returned to the barracks and trashed my application. For my remaining time in the PI I took courses, at the University of the Philippines and began to think about a new career. LOL Returning to CONUS in April 1965, I was assigned to Vint Hill Farms. There was soo little to do I was assigned TDY to the swimming pool for the Summer. My good buddy Leo Soucy and I started a handyman/janitorial business, which we worked in our off hours. We got contracts cleaning Dulles Airport restaurants, local banks and even cleaning windows at the base motor pool. Before things got really hopping, I was transferred to Arlington Hall. My buddy John Stone and I were assigned the task to do a pre IG inspection of classified documents. We must have done a good job because our next assignment was courier duty. It seems communications equipment was going astray and our job was to accompany shipments world wide. I wrote my own orders and traveled as a civilian. In January 1968 the vacation ended. I took a 90 day early out and returned to college. I am retired now, having spent most of my career as a fulfillment manager for the Franklin Mint. Post corporate world, I built a successful logistics consulting company from scratch. Lastly, I became an entrepreneur, buying, selling estates and other things of opportunity. This is my retirement hobby! My wife Elaine and I have two children and three grand children. We have a home in Florida but call Milford, Delaware home.
