In April 1971, I was airlifted out of the village during Korean riots after a Korean woman was killed by black airmen from nearby Osan Air Base.
Korean woman hid me in her closet for 2 days as myself and another ASA soldier tried to figure a way back to post. CBS covered the story.

My Army experience came at a special time for me and special time for our nation. I was privileged to serve with some truly fine fellow Americans. Some didn't particularly enjoy "Army" life, but we all loved our country. As far as I am concerned, the oath I took upon induction still stands.

Duty Stations First sent to Ft Riley Kansas for s short time then transferred to Ft Lewis Washington, We shipped out with the 4rh on the USS ship the General John Pope it I remember right. Off loaded outside Pleiku and were working on getting company area together and ops going and got transferred to a detachment of the 374th in Pleiku. We packed it up and flew to Saigon. Joined a convoy out to Chchi base camp of the 25th. Rest the time there with the 374th, After Vietnam I went to Comm unit supply in Camp Drake Japan. Over two years there then home.

Comments I have a lot of good memories of Japan and my service there. I met and served with a lot of great individuals. I kept in touch with some of them for quite some time but lost touch with them over the years. ASA was a tight knit group and served our country in exceptional ways and I am proud to have been a part of it. I still remember pulling duty at the main gate, town patrol and other sites and got to travel over the entire Island and visited some truly amazing places and met many of the local people.

Comments Really lucked out to get assigned to Det M. Worked with and socialized with some great (and a few not so great) guys while at Meissner. Guys like SSGT Larry Kinsey & his wife Sally, "Van" Vankirk, Mike Gilbert, Jim Moore, Gus Gustafson, Dick Lamble, and many others. For my wife Nancy & I, Germany was a great place to be. We extensively traveled through out Europe, and returned home with wonderful memories of the people we met and places we saw. Later, using the GI Bill I was able to earn an MBA degree. My experience as an ELINT operator also later on helped me land a great job with a Defense Contractor. All together it was was a worthwhile four years.

| Comments Although promised by the recruiter that I'd be sent to Europe, I ended up in Okinawa and two TDY's to Vietnam. The training I received at Fort Monmouth enabled me to get a gig with NASA upon separation and the G.I. Bill eventually helped toward a college degree. I recently learned of the passing of one SP5 Wallace 'Wally' Higa, another 'Pineapple' whose Class A uniform has come into my trustee ship. If anyone knew Wally, I'd appreciate hearing from you as I'd like to do the right thing for his memory. |
