Charles Gardner - MOS 058

Location Seattle, WA

Years of Service 1956-1959

Duty Stations Det. E, Gambell, Alaska, St. Lawrence Island Two Rock Ranch Station, Petaluma, California

Comments I had eight weeks basic infantry training at Ft Ord, California, and then six months Morris code training at Ft Devens, Massachusetts. I scored in the high 90 percentile on the enlistment test, and was interviewed by an ASA sargent about joining, The class started with 40 members, but ended up with only 11. The number 1 member was held there as an instructor, number 2 went to embassy duty, and being number 3, I had the choice of going to Alaska or Asmara, Ethiopia. Of Course, I chose Alaska, so the rest went to Ethiopia. I've always thought that it was funny that I failed the code test at basic training. I was glad to be enlisted in the ASA. By the end of my enlistment, I had been able to copy over 40 words a minute. Sometimes even being able to copy a "bug" sender for a few minutes before turning on the recorder.

Comments I made comments in Schroeder's epic history of ASAPAC. Sorry he died so early after publishing that volume. I helped him get info at the National Archives in College Park, MD, when he was researching for it. I volunteered at the Nat Arch for 16 years. I am pushing 90 years of age now and don't have much time left, I suspect. My days with ASA were always filled with new things, new friends and a renewed love for this great nation of ours. Don't lose it by voting socialist - ever!!

Comments I refueled aircraft for the First Electronic Warfare Aviation group out at El Paso Airport. Then we were changed to the First ASA Aviation Group. One day me and Spec 5 Sam Wrenn just finished refueling 3 RU21 aircraft, noticed smoke coming from three engine compartment, we didn't move 10 feet and you could not see. Me and Sam working together, putting a fire out in the engine compartment, the company put letters of appreciation into our 201 files because we prevented a situation from escalating, causing major destruction and lost of lives not only to our operations but also El Paso Gas Company who had their aircraft and personnel next door. It is a memory I will never forget, to be able to work and enjoy the experience I had with the people in this company

Ft. Devens - 3/64 to 12/64. Herzo Base - 1/65 to mid 12/67. Lets see the recruiter said "ASA always flies", NOT! I flew to Europe in nine and 1/2 days on the USS General Rose, Christmas at sea, New Years Eve on the train to Nuremberg, jeep to Herzo Base. I did get everything I ask for, training and duty, plus a whole bunch of stuff I didn't ask for (you all know the story). What do you mean we aren't covered by the Geneva Convention???? Oh well! Survived and the training got me my job at IBM that I held for 30 years.

Comments Interested in communication with other ASA-ers that where stationed especially at Rothwesten, but any German post and of others that where In or at asa posts in Germany. My tour in Germany was from Nov of 57 to Nov of 59. My first mos was 058 but was supplanted to 201 with a few extra months of training. The team I was with did a lot of TDY work. We spent about 33% of the time off base: with as much as several total months at "Graf" and over a month to France. Other bases where "visited" with time frames of 3-5 days to two weeks. Our duty, and I hear the same from many others, was good and interesting. Any replies to my e-mail address will be appreciated and acknowledged. Thanks

Dennis Gratz - I was SP5 served at USASAFS Kuma station, Chitose, Japan in 1969-1970. Then was transferred to Torii station, Okinawa. SP4 John R. Gary served with me at both sites. We became friends and worked together at both stations. I have been trying to locate him for sometime. Last I heard he was a customs inspector at a New York airport.

Comments My OIC was CW4 William McFadden and my NCOIC was Bob Hogan, who retired as a Sergeant Major. I was drafted in 1971 and chose to enlist int he Regular Army in the hope of having a bit of a say in where I wound up. I was lucky to have been recruited by the ASA while I was in AIT. I was acting platoon sergeant and while standing in a pouring cold rain in Ft. Leonard Wood during an FTX, my platoon sergeant, SSG Burba came up to me and said "Green, get your ass on that deuce and a half over there and get back to the barrack, the ASA wants to talk to you." I had not idea what an "ASA" might be, but Sergeant Burba added "If they offer you a job, TAKE IT!" So I did, but only after answering an exhaustive interview process during which I was even asked if I had joined the SDS while in college. I hadn't, but inferred it would have been disqualifying and was glad I had resisted the impulse to join when I was in college at ASU in Jonesboro, Arkansas. I had been in Advanced ROTC there, and had even completed my Summer Camp training, but alas, my PMS, Colonel Morris and I did not see eye to eye and I left the program in my junior year. The draft notice followed soon after. I lucked out in being posted to Torii Station. My best buddy in basic training, Chuck Henkel, and I went from Basic to AIT together, and he was the only other troop in our battalion to be recruited by he ASA. The luck of the draw sent Chuck to Torii with me. Other good friend at Torii were Tony Strazzo, Craig Webber, and John Infante. If any of those folks surf in I sure would like to get in touch with them. Good unit, good duty, and great buddies. TANS (That Ain't No S...T!) Thanks, Donnie Green
